On Sunday as we were leaving church a mother (Japanese) and her young daughter (Maybe 2 years old or so?) ended up leaving at the same time. It was raining pretty hard and so we were standing under an awning waiting until it died down a little to walk to the train station.
As the little girl and her mother were leaving, the girl turned around and waived to us. We, of course, all waved back and all smiled and exclaimed how adorable she was. Anyway, she slowed down and kept looking back at me. Then she stopped, and offered her hand to me as if to say, non-verbally, “Here, hold my hand. I’ll walk with you!”
I could’nt believe it! It was so precious! I had never had a child (especially a stranger) offer to hold my hand before. So I grabbed her hand we walked to the station together, closely behind her mother.
Stacey (one of our team members and a very good friend) said, “It’s like a gift from God! He knows that you are sacrificing so much by leaving your own daughter and wife for three weeks to serve Him, and it’s like He’s saying ‘thank you!’”
I asked Stacey to tell the little girl’s mother that in Japanese in order to thank her and let her know how significant this was for me. The woman said that her daughter had never done anything like that before, and especially towards a man. (Richard added that she’s normally sort of “stand-off-ish” with him!)
It was a great little bright spot in my morning. (Besides the fact that the service itself was really inspiring and encouraging!)
