Psa 49:7-9 Truly no man can ransom another, or give to God the price of his life, for the ransom of their life is costly and can never suffice, that he should live on forever and never see the pit.
I read this Psalm a couple of days ago and these verses stood out to me, but I wasn’t quite sure why. I just felt like there was something here beyond what I was initially seeing.
The basic idea seems to be that a human life is incredibly valuable, and the cost to redeem that life from “the pit,” is way more than any person in all the earth could ever afford. There is no way for a human being to pay the cost to God for his life to not go to the place of the dead. This concept reminded me of Mat 16:26, “For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what shall a man give in return for his soul?”
The good news? Later in the Psalm we read,
Psa 49:15 But GOD will ransom my soul from the power of Sheol, for He will receive me.
God paid for us what we could never pay on our own. The cost was extraordinary. The blood of His own son. And now He will receive us.
And the result?
Psalm 49:5 gives the answer. We have no need to fear in times of trouble. For the most valuable gift in the planet – eternal life – has already been purchased for us at a dear cost, and nothing can take that away from us.
