I used to think this was a strange request – for God to continue His love. Initially when I read this, several years ago, I thought “surely God will continue to love us!” Which, of course, is true. However, something about this world we live in and all of the challenges and questions it throws at us, it becomes easy to doubt. Many times over the last several months, I have found that this is, in fact, one of the greatest questions that I subconciously and repeatedly ask.
The best part about it is, in fact, that He will continue. He never changes. The writer of this Psalm was well-acquainted with the love of God. We see that in the preceding verses:
Psa 36:5-9 “Your steadfast love, O LORD, extends to the heavens, your faithfulness to the clouds. Your righteousness is like the mountains of God; your judgments are like the great deep; man and beast you save, O LORD. How precious is your steadfast love, O God! The children of mankind take refuge in the shadow of your wings. They feast on the abundance of your house, and you give them drink from the river of your delights. For with you is the fountain of life; in your light do we see light.”
